Words Matter: Positive Feedback and Employee Motivation

Words matter, and when you say something nice, you spread a little more happiness along the way.

When it comes to your office, spreading encouragement is all the more important. After all, who wants to work in an environment filled with criticism?

The language you use is what sets the tone for your office culture. So, when you are mindful of your language and incorporate positive feedback into your communication, you create a culture of recognition, listening, and making people feel valued! The outcome? Motivated and inspired employees who are more willing to be proactive!

It’s time to be positive: here’s why!

We often associate “feedback” with criticism. When your colleague tells you they have some feedback, it’s just natural to expect them to tell you what went wrong. But feedback doesn’t always have to be criticism, it can be positive as well!

Positive feedback is a great way to fuel growth and development – both personal and professional. By recognizing the value people add, you increase their confidence, show them that they’re supported, and improve employee retention (who doesn’t want to stay where they’re appreciated?).

National Say Something Nice Day is the perfect time to encourage employees

And what’s more, when you create a culture where praise is given freely, and not as something to be earned, you have employees who feel seen and recognized. This increases self-motivation, as people become more proactive—not out of the need to earn something, but because they genuinely enjoy being a part of the team.

Positive feedback helps encourage growth, reinforce good habits, and keeps people engaged. This, in turn, reduces churn as people feel like they’re a part of a team, and not working in isolation.

While we’re all focused on giving feedback, it’s important to recognize the value people – introverts, extroverts, and everyone in between – bring to the table – and recognize this in a way that truly resonates with them. Here’s how you can get started:
